Patriotism and Military Images in Everyday Life
I am Renee Marlin-Bennett, a professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, USA, and I am conducting a study called Patriotism and the Military Images in Everyday Life. For this study, I'm gathering people's views about patriotism and about the role of the military in everyday, civilian life.
I am asking you to allow me to interview you for this research study. Participation in this study is completely voluntary. Even if you decide to join now, you can change your mind later. The risks of participating in this study are no greater than those encountered in daily life.
If you choose to participate I will ask you about your reactions to an event you recently observed or participated in. Our conversation will last no more than 15 minutes unless you ask to continue it. I won't schedule any follow up interviews. You may enjoy sharing your reactions to the event, but there are no other direct benefits to you for participating in the research. More generally, I hope that this research will shed light on patriotism and people's views about the role of the military in society. These are important concerns for democracy. If you don't like a question for any reason, you can can simply skip it. You can also discontinue answering at any time.
No more than 100 people will be part of this study. I will ask you questions about the event and your reaction to it. I will also ask some questions about you. For example, I will ask about your political party and whether you served in the military. I'll ask what patriotism means to you. I won't ask your name, and I'll limit the amount of personal information I ask about you.
I'll ask if it's OK for me to take your picture and to create a video of your responses. You can say yes or no, and even if you say yes, you can change your mind and ask me to delete the picture or video. If you don't want to be recorded but you still want to answer, I'll takes notes (on paper or on a mobile device/phone), or I'll just listen carefully and write down the gist of what you said afterward.
It will probably take at least several months to publish the results of this study, but when I do, I will provide information about how to find out more about the results on my webpage,

If you have any questions or concerns about this study, please feel free to contact me. (See below.) If you have any questions about your rights as a research participant or feel that you have not been treated fairly, please call the Homewood Institutional Review Board at Johns Hopkins University at 410-516-6580.
